Today, I’m going to bring up some issue about Intel Core 2 Duo processor.

When the first time you heard about Core 2 Duo, what do you have in your mind?

For me, I was wondering… Why would Intel suddenly go up and jump to the code “2″ or “Duo”? Where is the ”

1″ or the “Solo”?

Actually, intel is not jumping. You can’t take the same thought as before (Pentium 1 to 4).

You will find intel’s “Core Solo” and “Core Duo” at the laptop Platform. Core 2 Duo is just another extension from them that made especially for Desktop Computer.

“Core Duo” is some sort of commercial name for “Pentium M” which is made with the 65 nm fabrication process. This type of processor is known as “Yonah”.

Yonah it a code name. Not a human name! for intel may be!

Core 2 Duo is the first processor that purely using the “core” architecture. Beside as a desktop processor ( known as Conroe), Core 2 Duo also can be founded in laptop/notebook platform (usually called with code “Merom“).

The “Core 2″ class, entered the market with 2 big guns. The first one is the Core 2 Duo to substitute the Folkie-Oldie Pentium 4 and Pentium D.

And the second is Core 2 Extreme to subsitute Pentium EE ( Extreme Edition).

The distinction between core 2 duo and core 2 extreme is located on the Clock and Multiplier. Core 2 Extreme have a higher clock and the multipliers is not locked.

(It’s mean that the processor power is unleashed to the maximum without any border)

And this picture is the 65 Nanometer Fabrication Technology. Just like a map of a town when you look with google earth!

The main feature of this Core 2 Class described below:

• L1 cache of 32 Kb
• Dual core and Quad Core (QX6xxx series)
• Intel Virtualization Technology
• EM64T or 64Bit OS Ready
• SSE3
• EDB (Excecute Disable Bit)
• Enchanced SpeedStep
• Intelligent Power (save more power when working)

Compare to the Athlon FX-62, the overclocker favorites, Core 2 Duo exceed the score with ease in 3D modelling, Rendering, etc, etc.

Of course, if Core 2 Duo can handle 3D modelling with ease, Hardcore game will be the same case! See the middle diagram.

While now we have entering the Quad Era, I think it is best for you to understand this theory before anything. Try using wikipedia to dig for more information on this subject.

I think it will be interesting because I’ve heard that it will be a “64 Core in 2017″. I don’t know if it is true or not, Just curious on how intel will fold their processor in the future.
