An OS (Operating System) is good if it can fully compatible with its hardware, software & brainware. So, is Vista worth as a good Operating System? Let’s Check it out!
In this post, I will share you about “Software Compatibility” under Microsoft Vista.
You need to know this matter well before you actually upgrade your OS to Vista. The reason is because you can avoid yourself from wasting money in upgrading OS.
I will tell you what is incompatible and what the solution is! Let’s get to the point!
Anti-Virus Software:
AntiVir 6.x series, McAfee Internet Security 8, Sygate Firewall, Zone Alarm
Note:
These Antivirus software are fully incompatible with Vista! If you are one of these software’s user, you need to switch to the other antivirus or firewall software. (Yeah, if you want Vista so badly, you should switch it!)
Solution:
- G-Data Internet Security 2007 may become your solution to protect you PC from intruder & Set Firewall on your computer. I use it myself and I found no distraction or annoying event (only one! This software is very hungry of your resources!)
- Norton Protection Software Series (Internet Security, Antivirus, Firewall, System Works, etc) may also become one of your fighting tool against viruses & spywares. Norton seems to work well with Vista.
Design Software:
Vector Based : Corel Draw 9, Freehand 6 or 7.
Note: This Software won’t working well/ not working at all under Microsoft Vista.
Solution: Try to upgrade your CorelDraw 9 to CorelDraw X3 version or Switch from Freehand to Adobe Illustrator CS2 for Full-compatibility solution.
Graphic/Bitmap Based: Adobe Photoshop Element 4.0, Picture Publisher, Corel Paint Shop 8-9.
Note: Design Software is a lifeblood for designer. Designer who use the above software need to blame Microsoft why he don’t make it compatible with it! Vista show no mercy on them!
Solution: Adobe Photoshop Element 5.0 seem working well on vista. Try to upgrade from version 4 to 5. Or try Photoshop 7 as your alternative solution to design.
Special note: An Open Source Software: GIMP! Working well with Microsoft Vista. It’s free and suitable for low budget designer.
Media Burning Software:
Nero Burning ROM 5, Win On CD 6 DVD Edition, DVD Cloner
Note: Personally, I like Win On CD 6. I can play mini game while the burning process is running. Kind of puzzle game that can fill my waiting time. Unfortunately, I can’t use it at Vista.
Solution: Try to switch to Nero 6 or 7 Premium.
Media Player:
Real Player, Cyberlink PowerDVD 2 Gold, Cyberlink PowerCinema
Note: Real Player is not supported in Vista. You need to wait for new driver or codec to use real player. Cyberlink PDVD 2 Gold and PowerCinema also won’t rendering any image under Vista
Solution:
- Try Real Alternative
- Upgrade your Cyberlink PowerDVD to the 6 version or latest.
- Or try using VLC Media Player. VLC or VideoLan is a nice player that can play any streaming audio and video (CD, VCD, DVD, DivX, 3gpp, dat, mp3, mp4, etc) except .rm (real media) extension.
Virtual Drive:
Deamon tool bis 4.08, Virtual CD 8.0.0.6
Note: Play game that need a “play disc” is annoying because it make a lot of noises from the Disc Drive. Virtual Drive solved this problem for you. Unfortunately, These two great application can’t work well with Vista! You need to seek for other solution for Vista!
Solution: Try to use the older version of Deamon tool. Personally, I use the version 3.64 on my Vista and it is working well!

The solution is simple. Don’t use Windows Vista.
Stay with Windows XP.

Hmm… I am currently using 2 operating System here! ha-ha!
Well, you right… Vista is not good right now. But, I sure, in 2-3 months later, all software and hardware will fully compatible with Vista.
So, Stay tune, I will update a post about it if I found something new!

You think so in 2-3 month’s time all the softwares will be compatible? It took me 3 years to get just one simple ChineseStar to fit my WinXPSP2 perfectly. All the time it was like hanging itself after I opened too many softwares at a time.
I think I will give Vista one year or more to be real stabilized before I can fully use it. You also need to have minimum 1G RAM too to run smoothly with it. Since I see in your list that most of the software I am using now is incompatible with Vista, I will put Vista aside for future consideration. What the use of having something that rocks but no software to play with.
Anyway, nice sharing here

you right, criz. I got an breakout information from my computer magazine that said all software & hardware are going to develop under vista and the time range is in this three months.
I hope it’s a real information. I’m also using a hardware that is not compatible and the driver will be ready in this November. hmmm… I agree with you that vista is not that good.
too sensitive and alot of notification while working with it!
And I can’t play my hungry-of-resources-game because my RAM is 1Gb only!
It annoy me a lot!
Hope this post will change other’s mind into upgrading to vista.
I use vista for research only. Because I’m still using the trial one!

Reply to Ken XuI got 120 days trial with some legal trick.

They have this new push for ‘Windows Mojave’ where they trick people into using Vista under a false name. Unfortunately, the advertisers missed the mark, because they failed to address the software incompatibility problems. I’ve played with Vista. The interface is nice and it has numerous bells and whistles, but it’s not usable until they fix the compatibility issues.
Reply to JamesI wish Microsoft would just fix the problem and stop trying to get me to buy into it until they do their job. Considering their track record for Operating systems, if they’re having this many problems getting a new one out to the market, its because everyone knows it has major issues. And so do they…
Come on, Microsoft. Fix the issues and then release Vista 2.0 instead of trying to dupe me and other intelligent consumers out there into buying an incomplete product.
