Single vs Dual Graphic Card?

By Ken Xu on Jun 4, 2007 in General

dual-vga-card.jpgThis post is about “duel” on single and Dual Graphic Card. If you are Laptop/notebook user, you have no need to read this post if you are in hurry! It won’t be a value for you anyway…

But if you are desktop user, this post may be valuable for you, especially if you are a gamer.

As you can see, lots of nowadays motherboards have begin to switching to the dual Graphic card solution. At first, Dual graphic card is for hardcore gamer with a high-end motherboard solution. But now, It seems manufacturer begin to apply this technology to the mainstream motherboard too!

So, the question is:

Is it worth or worthless to use a Dual Graphic Card solution?

In a performance perspective, it is crystal clear that Dual Graphic Card mode give you more performance boosting. Especially in render high quality animation and 3D environment. There is no doubt you will amazing by its performance when playing games like doom 4, second life, starcraft 2, etc, etc.

It give you another taste of 3D effect! No lag at all, the character run smoothly with the beautiful rendered building, sky, cloud, etc.

Winner in Performance? No doubt, Dual-graphic Card mode!

Reversely, if you take the price as your point of view, you will scare to death if you are a “not so rich and not so poor” people! :grin:Dual Graphic Card mode, is mean you need to use 2 (read: two! ) High End Graphic Cards to enable the dual graphic card mode. Dual solution is not available for low end graphic card.

This is suck! I don’t know why. May be this is what people called “Market Discrimination”

Only with one High-End Graphic Card will have my life! Two Graphic Card? Well, Go to H**L instead. :evil:High-end graphic card cost as high as sky while 2 High-End graphic Card will fly me to the moon! Too expensive and not reachable for people like me who like cheapest stuffs.

Winner in Price? No doubt, Single Graphic Card Mode!

The Next point of view is on the Motherboard itself, Since the launch of Quad Core, or the Multi Core presented by Intel, Many manufacturers have begin to apply SLI or Crossfire into their motherboard to support the fast running processor.

This event not only benefiting high-end user, but low-end and mainstream user can now enjoy SLI or Crossfire in the Low to Mid-end motherboard. You can find SLI attached on a 80 Dollars Motherboard now!

So, Which one will you choose when buying a motherboard. A fully Dual Graphic Card supported motherboard for 80 dollars or the one with no SLI or Crossfire (dual graphic card mode) supported?

Winner? No doubt, Dual Graphic Card Mode!

Last perspective, Power Saving and Consumption. As long as the water is dropping down, sun rises at from the East, tree grows up not down to the soil, this theory will not change for the entire civilization:

low performance = low power consumption = Power Saving

High performance = high power consumption = wasting electric bill!

Dual Graphic Card consumption more power that you’ve ever imagine. A normal PSU (Power Supply Unit) Won’t fit this demand. Dual Graphic Cards are just like Hungry Cerberus (2 headed dog) found a tasty food! If you don’t buy a high grade PSU, I doubt your normal PSU will last longer…!

Beside thirsty of Power Supply, Dual Graphic Card Solution bring you more heat & noise then before. Noise comes from the cooling fan and devices while heat comes from the chipset itself.

This video will show you the well mounted-under-working Dual Graphic Card.

Do you hear the sound? Pretty noisy, huh?

Winner? No doubt, Single Graphic card Mode!

Conclusion?

Well, decision is in your hand. Don’t pick Dual Graphic Card if you don’t have enough budget. While one is enough, why choose to use two when the performance is only leveraged to 20-30%? Well… decide it by yourself!
