SouthBridge Toasted?! Or Barbequed?

By Ken Xu on Apr 27, 2007 in General

If you are directed by the last post, first, I need thank you for reading my whining.

and if you are a new one that just join, I’ll just kick my engine to start telling why a SouthBridge can be Toasted (Burned) Silencely!

There are 3 Common reasons why you “southbridge” may get toasted itself!

First, beware of your low quality Power Supply!

If you are using a standard Casing (Cheap one), It will have an integrated Low grade Power Supply.

And this power supply usually cannot provide sufficient power to each of your computer hardware components or devices.

Result?

You computer is performing within an electricity jogging  and dancing  without your notice, inside your black box (your case). You devices are getting a supply of sometimes low and sometimes high supply of power.

It will cause your southbridge to work improperly on connecting your devices together (Just like a broken bridge, I think).

And if this event keep going and going, your southbridge will toasted because of the instability inside the flow of electricity.

Second, Beware of some old Intel’s SouthBridge Chipset!

Some old Intel’s Southbridge Chipset is a little allergic with USB connection devices.

Example of devices? You see it just beside your keyboard!

Yes, your mouse. and a little futher to your printer!

Printer is the biggest problem here. Your chipset can be toasted just because you unplug and plug your Printer’s USB connector several times from your Motherboard! (in the “switch is on” position)

(That’s one of the reason of my toasted chipset!)

Please be careful when you need to unplug a USB devices. It will not concern you if you have the latest released modern motherboard. It only concern to them, who have the old and allergic intel’s chipset board.

IÂ will list-out for you and let you know which chipsets are the group of “allergic one” in the next post.

The Third Reason of being toasted:

Overworking!

To be frankly, I usually leave my computer “on” 24 hours a day to download things (most of them is movies  ).

And while downloading high capacity files on the net, I still have a bad habit to work it out a little bit harsh!

Example:

I burn DVD, Play Games and hear musics, together at the same time!

This event make my inner side of black box (I love to called my computer cases a black box. Sounds cool!) become hot!

the reason of become hot is : I don’t put sufficient of cooling fans in my black box!

I don’t use cooler master, I also not using Simbadda Sim Cool. Only the very standard one that you can carry back for $10!

Result?

Your black box’s inner side won’t survive from this kind of heat!

It will not happen directly. It will slowly crafting your hardware’s ability and sustainability. You will slowly notice your PC is working slower and slower each day, just like you are casting a “sudden-death” magic (do you play games?) to your computer!

Until the day is come, your computer will automatically shutdown and won’t on anymore although you keep pushing the “on” button!

The solution?

Use good cases! Remember this sentences and you will know why:

The ultimate saving tips is not about buying what’s the cheapest…
It’s about finding which best quality hardware that have the lowest price!

I break my own rules, I think. That’s why I got my southbridge toasted!

Ok, I think that all the reason of a toasted or barbequed southbridge chipset.

See you on the next post! Bye!
