Flash on Blog - Wise or Not?

By Ken Xu on Sep 5, 2007 in Blogging, Technical Skills

There are some experts around the world that try to defend their blog from flash animation. They keep talking and shouting that flash animation is not good for blog because it will distract and pull reader’s attention to it and ignore the real contents.

I must say that this theory is not 100% true. There will always another side of the coin. Flash animation is not only about distraction, it’s about creativity and uniqueness. We must follow the flow of technology and use the most out of it to bring a good impressions of our blog to our readers.

For example, below movie is created with flash technology:

Oh, fun, isn’t it? :D
that’s the power of flash technology. If people keep avoid using flash technology, there will be no such a fun thing to do with! :D

It’s obvious that flash could give more than JPEG, GIF, and PNG format can do for us. The strong point of flash is that you can add scripts and behaviors to the animation and control it. What could do better than this?

Well, I know that there are several disadvantages of Flash Format (swf). Especially in the eyes of Search Engine Robots. It seems until today, flash format is not well-read by SE spider. So, make sure to not use FLASH SITE/BLOG if you are serious with your blogging business.

FLASH SITE indeed show something good. But you won’t get any serious SERP from Search engine (or not even one if you use Flash purely), which mean nothing but a piece of Junk site floating around the blogosphere.

The solution of adding flash animation is not to overwhelm your blog with it. But to blend them nicely together within your blog template.

For example, your blog may become “groovy” after the add of the following Flash Media:

  1. ‘Feed Subscription / RSS button’ animation with behavior
  2. ‘Subscribe to e-Mail button’ animation with behavior
  3. Flash Games or Movies
  4. Interactive Logo
  5. Interactive Navigation bar with sounds (example:fullyillustrated)
  6. Etc.

There is no need to score high for those Feed/RSS buttons in Google Image Search. Switching the image into a flash animation could help you seize some extra attention. Flash animation is purely designed for to please ‘human’ user and not the ‘robotic’ search engine spider.

The only one thing to watch out (and sometimes very sensitive) is the trigger to begin the loop of the animation. Reader’s eyes is so sensitive to a glowing or moving objects while reading your contents. If you happen to let the ‘moving’ animation looping automatically (no behaviors), you will likely to distract your reader and pull their eyes away from the main content.

I believe you don’t want this kind of result, do you? :)

Flash has been misused by some peoples. But it will not represent that flash is useless.

Actually, I’m planning to embedded some flash components in this blog. Please give me your feedback about it and how is your point of view toward Flash elements in a blog. :)

Flash image replacemnet like swfIR looks good for headlines and is supported by Google. Otherwise Flash on blogs is mostly useless IMHO…

Remember that Flash takes up much resources, Some Flash banners e.g. even block the browser. So use Flash very wisely and take into account that it loads a while.
